Get to know one of London’s up-and-coming artists Eleanor Johnson. Whimsical yet liminal, Eleanor works are filled with references to mythology from her Gaelic heritage. Her works are in between, where the subjects are visually absent and present at the same time.

Pancake or waffle?

Waffle.

What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?

Probably the private view for an exhibition myself and my partner, Gabriel Kenny-Ryder, organised in Peckham where we exhibited alongside our friend, William Kennedy. It was a wonderful evening and a culmination of a lot of hard work - and it was so lovely to see so many friends and happy faces all together! That’s definitely been the highlight of my career so far.

What do you treasure the most in the current city you live in?

Victoria Park on a quiet, sunny, early morning with my dog (Bluebell) with me. I’m more of a countryside person at heart, so the park is my happy place.

What are you looking forward to the most after the pandemic ends (hopefully soon!)?

Travelling abroad to a warm, sunny place with the people I love, to find a beach to watch the sunset while drinking a nice cold beer.

Who is your favourite female artist practicing today?

Cecily Brown. I love her big paintings - they’re bold, seemingly effortless, uncontrived and just magical. She also talks so beautifully about her work. She’s such an inspiration!
